I was a Super Nintendo kid, so I remembered always feeling a little envious toward Sonic. Sega positioned him to be cooler than Mario. Sonic broke rules, he was faster, and the graphics were a little better. Mario managed to survive the threat, and they both became friends in the end. That's what it's all about.
